10. Wadali Brothers
The Wadali brothers are Puranchand Wadali and Pyarelal Wadali, from Amritsar, Punjab. Both before being Sufi singers had very uncommon professions that any Sufi singer would have. Puranchand Wadali was a regular in a wrestling ring and Pyarelal Wadali used to play roles in Rasleela. They entered Bollywood in 2003. They rendered their voice to Gulzar’s lyrics in the movie Pinjar. They have also worked for the movie “Dhoop”, “Tanu weds Manu”, Mausam, and various others. They have received any awards, Padma shri by the government of India is the highest.
9. Master Saleem
Master Saleem or the popular Saleem shehzaada is an Indian singer, from Punjab. He was just eight when he gave a performance at Bathinda Doordarshan. His first album, Charkhe Di Ghook was released when he was just 10. Many of us don’t even think of starting singing even at this age. Then, his popularity grew and grew. He has given voice to many movies and albums. Some of his best Sufi songs are Teray Hussan, Ajj Hona Deedar, Tu Hi Tu, Sorood Shab, and many more.
8. Ustad Ghulam Ali
He is from Pakistan, Patiala Gharana. He started his career by singing for a radio station in 1960. He was into singing ghazals, bhajans (songs devoted to god), ans had sung many Bollywood songs. Though he is from Pakistan, he is same the way popular in India. Soe of his notable works includes Heer, Woh Kabhi Mil Jayen To, Woh Jo Hum Mein Tum Mein Qarar Tha, Rabba Mere Haal Da, Kiya Hai Pyaar Jise etc.
7. Pathnay Khan
The famous Singer is from Pakistan, who is no more, though his music is still alive, which takes us into a different world. Born in 1929, he was particularly known for his Ghazals. The man had the magic, to control the breath of the listeners. He had the capability of singing for hours. In 1979, he received Pride of Performance award for his singing.
6. Rabbi Shergil
He is a great Indian musician and a Sufi singer. He was born Gurpreet Singh Shergil. “Bullah ki Jaana”, I know many of your favorites, was the chart-topper song of 2005. His genres include Punjabi, rock, and indipop apart from Sufi. His debut album Rabbi was released in 2004; prior to that he composed jingles for advertisement agencies and had an unsuccessful stint with Sony Music and Tehelka. his second album Avengi Ja Nahin, released in 2009, was another hit. He has sung for Many other films as well.
5. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a Pakistani musician, primarily a singer for Qawwali. He possessed extraordinary voice, with the capability of attracting a lot of people. He is often known as the “shehenshah-e-qawwali”, (meaning the king of qawwali). It is not easy to earn this title. He gave his public performance at the age of 16. Since then, he has emerged as a star.
4. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
He is a Pakistani singer, primaril for Qawwali. Do not confuse him with Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, he being his uncle. Apart from qawwali, he is good at ghazals and other light music. He was trained by his uncle(Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). At the age of nine, he gave his first public performance. Mukh Tera “Sohneya Sharab Nalon Changa” and “Gin Gin Taare Lang Gaiyaan Rattaan”, are the ghazals he began his career with. he has given his voice to Bollywood songs and albums as well. He has received many prizes too, the latest being “Best Singer Male” for Zinda Bhaag at the 1st ARY Film Awards in 2014.
